What are the parts of a lamp?

Finial - The finial is the decoration on top of the lamp that secures the shade to the harp.

Harp - The harp is the rounded metal piece under the shade, it connects at the lamp's socket and holds the shade in place.

Socket - The socket is the cylindrical piece at the top part of the lamp base. It houses the on/of switch and holds the light bulb.

Base - The base is the actual body of the lamp itself.

Choosing a lamp.

There are so many types of lamps and lamp styles to choose from, but the choice can be overwhelming. A lamp should be a reflection of your taste so don't just settle for anything. Before you buy, consider style, scale and what function your lamp will have in the room.

What style do I choose?

Of course if your decor is traditional, you will want to stay along the lines of a traditional lamp and if your style is Shabby Chic you will want to stay with a light, cottage type feel. However, you do not have to match everything in the room, matching everything creates boredom. If you find a fantastic lamp you cannot live without, buy it, you will always be glad that you did. If it is not along the lines of the décor of the room, consider painting the lamp or change out the shade to complement the décor. There are so many options, be open to new ideas you have never considered before.

What size lamp do I choose for my room?

Decide where the lamp will be placed before you purchase it. If it will sit on a table, make sure it is proportional to the table it will sit on. You don't want a lamp that takes up half of the table, on the other hand you don't want one that is too small for the tabletop. If you are using your lamp for ambient lighting, which is general room lighting, almost any size will do. However, if you want to use the lamp for reading, you will need to make sure it is big enough to cast light on the area where the reader will be sitting. Don't frustrate yourself by putting a tiny lamp in your favorite reading spot.

When purchasing a floor lamp, the bottom of the shade should be level with the ear of the seated person. This helps to keep the bulb from shining in their eyes.

What size shade do I use for my lamp?

A good rule of thumb to use when determining shade size is to make sure that the shade is approximately 8" wider than the widest part of the lamp base and that the lamp shade should be approximately 2 to 3 inches shorter than the lamp base.

Lamp shades are at their best height when the bottom of the light shade is 1/2" above the lamp neck. The lamp neck is the tall column that holds the socket in place. This should place the lamp shade sitting just below eye level which prevents the bulb from casting light directly into your eye.

To make your room interesting and inviting, vary the size and height of the lamps in the room. Different heights and sizes add depth to the room flooding several areas with just the right amount of light.

Important Note - never use a higher wattage bulb than is recommended by the manufacturer.
