Shade Basics

Size

A good rule of thumb to determine lamp shade size for your table lamps is the bottom of the shade should be approximately 8 inches wider than the widest part of the base and the lamp shade should be approximately 2 to 3 inches shorter than the base.

The lamp shade is at its best height when the bottom of the light shade is ˝ inch above the lamp neck. What is the lamp neck? It is the tall column that holds the socket in place. This should place the lamp shade sitting just below eye level which prevents the bulb from casting light directly into your eye.

Shape

Continuity and harmony are the keys to a beautiful lamp. The lamp base and light shade should complement each other rather than compete for attention.

The shape of the light shade generally should follow the contour of the lamp. Round lamps should have roundish light shades and square lamps should have light shades with straight lines.

Style

Style is more a matter of taste. Match an elegant lamp with an elegant shade and a whimsical lamp with a cute shade. However, do not get boxed in with a set of rules you never leave. If you have a highly decorative lamp that looks great with a plain light shade, use it! If the shade is too plain, consider keeping the simple shade but getting a different color. You'd be surprised what a difference a splash of color on a table lamp will make.

Color

In the past, light shades have been traditionally white and off-white. White shades served the functional purpose of letting lots of light through to brighten the room.

Today, there are so many more choices. Colored light shades play a large role in completing the décor of a room. Colored shades direct light downward adding areas of drama throughout the room. Matching colored shades with the walls in a living room or a chic bedroom adds sophistication to the room while whimsical shades in a contrasting color on a cute chandelier draw your attention to the sweet fixture they adorn.

Whatever your taste, don't be afraid to splash a little color on your fixtures, you never know, you just might like it!

Fabric

Shades come in so many different fabrics such as silk, cotton, leather, linen, parchment paper and the list goes on and on. At Heavenly Lights, we concentrate on silk lamp shades. Why? Because they are fabulous! Nothing is better than a gorgeous cottage-style chandelier hanging in a bedroom with luxurious dupioni silk lamp shades. Silk is elegant, and when added to a chandelier, puts off a soft glow to the entire room.

Silk doesn't go with everything though. It complements fixtures that are more formal, like a chandelier in your bedroom, dining room or living room. Silk is also a great choice for your little one's nursery or your young child's room. However, when the Nerf balls and airplanes start hitting the chandelier in your 6 year old boy's room, it is time to call in the new shades!

Our silk lamp shades are made with two fabrics, an inner lining fabric that matches the color of the outer shade and the dupioni silk which is the outside covering. The wire frame of the lamp shade is covered by the two fabrics which are stretched over the frame and sewn together. Plastic liners are not used in the shades. Silk lamp shades are pricey because they are more labor intensive than other light shades.

Cleaning Your Shades

For light shades other than silk, use a clean soft cloth or a vacuum brush to dust the lamp shade inside and out. Do this at frequent intervals such as once a week because you want to avoid a build-up of any kind on your shades.

Silk Lamp Shades: Dust your silk lamp shades by hand often to extend their life. Left unattended, a silk lamp shade will eventually dry rot. Your silk lamp shades should not need to be washed often if kept free of dust. However, when it is time to clean them, make sure it is a hot day outside.

  1. Fill warm water in a tub to cover the top of the shade.
  2. Add detergent to the water-only using Dreft or Ivory Snow.
  3. Add suds to a towel or soft brush and rub spots in a gentle circular motion.
  4. Then dip the light shade up and down in the tub.
  5. When the water gets dirty, change it out with warm sudsy water.
  6. Wash a second time.
  7. Then run a tub of clean water.
  8. Dip the shade up and down in the clean water to rinse.
  9. The fabric may stretch or sag but it will tighten back up when it dries.
  10. Put the light shade outside to dry in the sun.
  11. The heat will cause the stretched silk to reshape onto the frame.

The shades should be as good as new!

Shade Tips

  • Always remove the plastic on new lamp shades in order to avoid a fire.
  • The measurement of the center of your light bulb to the outside of your chandelier should be approximately 3 inches so that the heat will not scorch the inside lining of your lamp shade.
