Antique Lighting Information

What is an Antique?

The dictionary establishes an antique as a collectible decorative or household object, often a piece of furniture, which is valued because of its age.

Many years ago, the tax man decided that an item had to be 100 years old to be an antique. The law had provisions that allowed people owning antiques to use them to get tax breaks. Soon, the government started losing money. Eventually, limits were put on what could be deducted as an antique which solved the government's problem. Even though this governmental decision is history, many old-time antique dealers insist that an item is not an antique until it is 100 years old.

Most of us recognize the charm and elegance of hand-crafted antiques compared to modern mass-produced pieces but what constitutes an antique, other than age is often vague. Many times an object's history and rarity play a larger role in deciding value that its actual age. A plastic bag 100 years from now would only be a 100 year old plastic bag, not a valuable antique. Antiques need to be old but they also need to have an element of art and craft. Items that are not found everywhere, something costly to produce today. Though antiques seem expensive, considering the cost of labor, the craftsmanship and the rarity of the item, antiques are quite affordable.

Selecting Antique Lighting for Your Home

Our main advice for selecting antique lighting for your home is to choose what you love. Don't get hung up on matching fixtures by their exact date. Homeowners of the late 1800's eventually redecorated and mixed and matched their fixtures too.

Don't be afraid to add antique lighting to a new home, that's what adds style and character.

An easy approach is to choose a time period of 20 years. Try to stay with fixtures that were produced and used in that 20 year time frame. For example, if you are more drawn to fixtures from the 1920's, you may want to focus on fixtures from the year 1910 to 1930. However, if you find a fixture from 1900 that you have to have or a chandelier from 1940 that you can't live without, buy it!

Homeowners of the late 1800's typically decorated with electric lighting in the high traffic areas of their home. Second floors and bedrooms were usually lit with candlelight or kerosene. After electricity became common in homes, simple fixtures were used for these rooms like plain wall sconces. Ceiling lights were not popular in bedrooms until the 1930's.

In the earlier days, fixtures were hung lower than they are today because early electric lighting only produced 10 watts. Homeowners of this era tended to place several fixtures all around the room. To keep a period feel in your home, use more lights at higher wattage.

Uneasy about changing out all of your fixtures? No problem, combine several types of light sources in your room. Maybe start with an antique lamp which can be placed anywhere in the room, then a chandelier and later wall sconces. Slowly introduce your fixtures one-at-a-time to give yourself a chance to see exactly what you like. But watch out, from our experience, once you change out a single fixture to antique lighting, you will tend to fall in love with it and change out the rest of the fixtures quickly thereafter. Don't say we didn't warn you.

Don't miss out on these great finds!
