What is a sconce?

The official definition of a sconce is a bracket projecting from a wall to hold a candle or other light. Not to be confused with (and sometimes is) a scone which is a thick, flat round cake cooked on a griddle or in an oven. Sconces are also referred to as wall sconces, wall lighting or wall lights.

Before electricity wall lights were transported from room to room to bring light to a dark area. The sconces were temporarily placed on a wall to light the space and when the person went to another area of the home, the sconce was taken with them. These days, most sconces are permanently attached to the wall that they hang on.

Why do I need wall sconce lighting?

Light needs to come from several sources in your room. Natural light is always pleasing and friendly but not all rooms have natural light. We obviously recommend chandeliers and lamps to place around the room but what about when you just can't seem to get enough light? When adding more wattage to your chandelier makes the room glary and adding another lamp eats up your square footage, try sconce lighting.

Wall sconce lighting is perfect for rooms that need that final ray of light to set the mood. Sconce lighting provides a warm glow to the walls and area it surrounds. Wall lights complement other elements in the space without overpowering the room.

Never overlook the importance of room design because you have a small space. Sconce lighting can make a grand statement in small areas. Since it is mounted to the wall, it takes up no extra space. It serves the dual function of providing beauty and light. In fact, it may be the only decoration you need in the room.

Wall sconce lighting also serves the purpose of lighting dimly lit hallways and stairwells for safe navigation.

Lastly, we need sconce lighting because it is fabulous! It can be placed in any room of your home, lining a dark hallway, adorning the sides of your bed or flanking a beautiful mirror in your bathroom. The possibilities are endless.

How high do I hang my wall sconces?

The bottom of your sconces should be 60" from the floor. Wall sconces hung in rooms with higher ceilings may have to raise that height for the appropriate look. The top portion of the sconce should be at eye level but you should never be able to see the interior bulb of your sconces.

To light a hallway, alternate the fixtures on opposing walls where they are not facing each other. Sconce lighting should hang 8 to 10 feet apart while the bottom of the sconce should be at least 60" from the ground.

What bulbs do I use in my wall lighting?

Sconce lighting in our unique wall sconces category and our sconces category takes 40 watt bulbs (small candelabra base). If you intend to use chandelier or sconce shades, you will need to use 25 watt bulbs or less for safety. Some of our antique/vintage wall sconces require large based light bulbs. However, we still recommend 40 watt bulbs with no sconce shades and 25 watts if you are planning to use shades.

What if my room is not wired for sconce lighting?

We realize not every house is wired for wall sconces. That is why lighting in our antique wall sconces and unique wall sconces categories can be wired with a plug at no extra charge. You will simply need to let us know you would like your wall lighting wired with a plug when placing your order. We recommend hiding that unsightly cord with one of our fashionable cord covers that come in an array of colors to match your décor.

Another option is to have a licensed electrician wire your room so that your sconces can be hardwired to the wall. This usually costs from $50 to $100 for each space you have wired. We find that it is well worth the investment.
